3.0 out of 5 stars The metal's are great but the story's rusty., 16 Jan 2011
This review is from: The Final Empire: Mistborn Book One: 1 (Paperback)
There are a lot of great things in this Trilogy but some things have been done before and done much better. I absolutely loved the way magical powers were explained, the three forms Allomany, Ferruchemy & Hemalurgy were a true highlight. I warmed to some of the characters but Vin, who is the heroine of the piece is SO sterotypical, waiflike, beaten (literally) from birth by just about everyone including her brother, meets charismatic Rebel leader who immediately takes her under his wing, excels at newly found magical powers (the force is strong in this one), marries childhood sweatheart (who happens to be voted King), is in numerous battles and always overcomes A Team like odds, gets captured by the bad guys not once but twice and is allowed to escape and more. Some nice supporting cast members include the Kandra. My favourite part of the whole trilogy was when Vin was told who the spy was by the aforementioned Kandra. Here was the real problem for me, Trudi Canavan did the waif becoming Magician earlier and better. At times the story raced along only to go crashing into a wall of Theology, 300+ religions and many of them explained. Finally, for a 'world' everywhere was too close together, it took Bilbo and Frodo months to do their respective journeys, here things were done in days, nitpicking possibley but the omnipresent Chief Badguy Ruin had a thousand years to find something in the size of Wales hmmmm.
