3.0 out of 5 stars Not very Austentatious, 6 Oct. 2008
This review is from: The Jane Austen ITV Collection - Mansfield Park / Northanger Abbey / Emma (3 Disc Box Set) [2007] [DVD] (DVD)
I saw the whole short season of ITV Austen adaptations from which the three featured here were chosen and the main mystery to me is why it was that by far the the best of them - 'Persuasion', with Rupert Penry Jones and the excellent Sally Hawkins - was not included in this set.

This 'Mansfield Park' is especially poor, partly because Billie Piper - (a decent actress when in the right role, to be sure) is miscast. Even her looks, with her trademark bleached blonde hair and black eyebrows, are just wrong for a lead Austen part.

For Mansfield Park, look for the greatly superior version starring Frances O' Connor as Fanny Price.

I. E. THOMAS says:
You are quite right about Mansfield Park - Billie Piper belongs in Dr Who and is not a Jane Austen type at all.
However good the cast were, the camera work (mostly hand held) was absolutely abominable. I knew we were in for a rough ride when, near the start, the camera man seemed to have decided to try and join in with the badminton game. I was watching the programme on a six foot screen at home and mostly the picture was bobbing up and down and side to side - that is when the zoom lens wasn't being cranked in and out idiotically or even worse -flash panned from one person to another. When the director started to try and find out how fast he could cut between persons talking ,I gave up and turned it off.
The only use for this production is as an example at Film Schools of how not to make a Film - I've seen much better work on "You've Been Framed"
