City of Blood,
This review is from: City of Strife (Kormak Book Four) (The Kormak Saga 4) (Kindle Edition)
City of Blood might be a better title for this, or Red Harvest, if it hadn't already been taken.
The previous Kormal books showed him out on the edges of Empire, where bad things happen far away from the secure and seemingly civilised city-states he's protecting.
This novel brings him back to one of those cities, and, unsurprisingly, it proves to be as dangerous as any tunnel or wood in the back of beyond.
The dangers are a little bit less obvious, though, and Kormak has to use his wits as often as his sword to survive. He's trapped between two warring families, and although he couldn't care less about either, he knows that the disapearance of his Order's agents is tied in with their conflict. As he investigates he finds there's an ancient evil at the root of it all.
I enjoyed seeing Kormak in an urban setting, and I particularly enjoyed the villains of the piece, all of whom have their own agenda.
The book is fast paced, violent and cleverly worked out to the last page. Go buy it.
