You only need the drums,
This review is from: Rock Band: Band in a Box (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
Outside the (justified) criticism for price-gouging, you don't need this whole kit. Generic USB mikes work fine (the joypad is used for menu interaction), and the Guitar Hero III controller is so far superior to the terrible RB guitar as to be worth leaving the bundle on the shelves just because that thing's included.
Take note that the drum kit will still need work if you're planning to do any serious playing; extra PVC supports, sound dampening, better drumsticks and probably a replacement pedal - most of which must either be imported from the US (at least for now) or built DIY.
Might as well have just included the control box...

So can you just use the Guitar Hero 3 guitar and it will work fine?

R. Pyke says:
If you plan to just play guitar or bass then yes. But you can't play drums without the drum kit, the RB guitar is far superior to the GH2/GH3 guitars too (unless you are a midget then the GH2/3 guitars are probably your size).
You can use the xbl headset (wired or wireless) for the mic, however it isn't the same really.
I just gladly shelled out the money for the band in a box and the game disc, I can see how much time I will spend playing this, it's going to work out cheaper per hour than every other game I own put together!
Now to wait until tomorrow... or play the bootleg version with the mini guitar from GH2.
