Poor Quality and Content,
This review is from: The Big Finish Companion - Volume 1 (Hardcover)
Unfortunately, I can only echo the comments of the other reviewers. As a Big Finish subscriber I was very much looking forward to this as something that would replace the previous Audio Adventures hardback, bring the story up to date, and point the way to the future. The book was heavily hyped on the Big Finish website and others, but it is, sadly, a crushing disappointment. The paper is desperately cheap, and the content solely black and white. The photographs are poorly reproduced, and the whole things seems very under designed. As the first reviewer said, Big Finish's free newletter Vortex has ten times the production values of this book. For the price, I would have expected something glossy, with a selection of colour photos at the very least. I would also have preferred more emphasis on the Doctor Who audios and spin offs, and a more indepth treatment overall. The page count is bulked out by having a huge type face. The book needs smaller print, more detail, higher quality paper, and colour to justify the price.
I received this as a Christmas present, for which I'm grateful, but I won't be buying volume 2, if it ever appears. This is not a fitting tribute to the excellence of Big Finish's productions, or the hard work done by their actors, writers and directors every month. Big Finish need to have a long, hard think about their production and design values if they contemplate more. As others have said, this would buy two Big Finish audios at full price, or half a dozen in one of their sales. Save your money for those, and get a much better idea of what makes Big Finish great.
