It appears to be every bit as good as the model it replaces (3.6), perhaps better as it is a new model and does more. But, if you're looking for something that can do things quickly - this isn't it. Everything is automatic, so once you've told it whether it's a small or large battery, and cold or average temperature, it does everything else. Being slightly less than 4amps, and depending on how empty your battery is, it gets there slowly, but, once it's reached 80% capacity, it switches from full charge to absorption, slowly reducing the charge as it makes its way to 100%. Which is very good for the life of the battery. But, so far, it's been on absorption mode for 8 hours after taking a couple hours to reach 80% (my battery was still quite charged) and there's no way to tell it to forgo this if you want it to finish quickly.
It does say that once absorption mode has engaged, the battery is charged enough so the car can be used, but for those like me, who don't have a garage to do this so can leave it going overnight, it might be slower than they really want.
I have a 77amph battery, which is probably average or slightly larger, so the time the last 20% takes to complete will be a good indicator of what yours will take. Once charged it switches to maintenance mode and can be left for months if need be. I'll add the time it actually takes to fully complete once I have it so you'll know.
Update - around 9 hours in total to finish the last 20% to fully charged.
Update 3/4/14 - last top-up took only 4 hours for absorption to finish. Not sure why it's faster now, perhaps the weather being warmer, or the battery in better condition helps, either way I'm happy with it.
