Poorly read and unexciting story,
This review is from: "Doctor Who": The Runaway Train (BBC Audio) (Audio CD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)Although a big Doctor Who fan, a big audio book fan, and normally a BBC Audio fan, I wasn't impressed by "The Runaway Train", for a number of reasons:
(1) having Matt Smith (a.k.a. The Doctor) reading a story about The Doctor in the third person felt odd.
(2) the story was just read by one person, rather than having a cast perform it for audio.
(3) Matt Smith sadly doesn't do a great job of reading - probably better than I would do, but he is not in the calibre of say Stephen Fry at voicing audio books. Largely monotone and with very limited ability to vary accents, his reading just wasn't exciting.
(4) the story itself isn't that great. It felt like a six year old's game of cowboys with a tiny piece of old Star Trek science fiction thrown in.
That's not to say that "The Runaway Train" is all bad. It starts weakly, but as it goes on it does improve a little, although with a very predictable and unsatisfactory ending.
