5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendously lifelike!, 10 Jan. 2009
This review is from: Dawn Chorus: A Sound Portrait of a British Woodland at Sunrise (British Library - British Library Sound Archive) (Audio CD)
The one slightly cheating thing about this CD is the title, which really would have been better in the plural because it rather gives the impression that you'd be listening to a single dawn chorus right from the beginning. If you want a semblance of that experience, look out the wonderful Dawn Chorus CD by Geoff Sample (but see my update below, however!). Anyway, although you don't get that in this CD, you do get five immensely beautiful, clear and lifelike dawn chorus recordings - a total of 73 minutes.

The recordings are all in southern England, and, for those who have not experienced British late spring or early summer dawn choruses, these would be quite something - that is, even more 'quite something' than they are to a dyed-in-the-wool Southern Brit like Yours Truly! The birdsong in these choruses has a sweet, musical and varied quality that is quite unlike, say, tropical birdsong, at least what I've heard of it in recordings.

I can think of no better way to bring the joy of spring into your living space.

Update, August 2015...
Actually, I became dissatisfied with this and also Geoff Sample's wonderful dawn chorus CD. -- Why?

Because they both actually present a series of shorter recordings - in this case as different tracks, and in Sample's case joined together to give a cheating impression (not very convincing for me) of an actual dawn chorus sequence.

This was among the many inadequacies I found in then currently available natural soundscape commercial CDs, which motivated me in 2012 to purchase a suitably professional-quality sound recorder and to record natural soundscapes myself, the fully authentic way that I, as a lifelong naturalist and very long-time hiker in wild places, really wanted. In June 2014 and again in June 2015 I recorded a series of really extended authentic dawn choruses in usually spectacular locations in Devon and Cornwall, UK, including the Teign Gorge, Branscombe Landslip, and the Cot Valley south of Cape Cornwall. Most of those fill two CDs each, starting with the quietude before the first pre-chorus twitters, and then you hear the full unfolding of the chorus.

So, although I still give this album a 5-star rating for quality, I do so with a certain reservation now, because, aside from technical quality considerations, I MUCH prefer the long, 2-CD dawn chorus recordings that I myself subsequently made, which give at least me one great frisson that could not be obtained from shorter, more snapshot-type recordings. Unfortunately, for the moment my CDs are not available on Amazon UK, but they are from amazon.com and my own e-Store.
