2.0 out of 5 stars BOREDOMLANDS, 14 Feb. 2010
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Borderlands (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
A game that seems to promise so much delivers so very little. It is atmospheric and has very cool, stylish comic book style graphics. This game has grasped Fallout 3's coat tails and tries to be similar but with little story and more action and shooting. It wants to be in-between RPG and FPS but doesn't excel at either. You spend a lot of time shooting mutant dog type creatures which is ridiculously tedious, even when you can make short work of them its just plain repetitive. You pick up missions by speaking to be people and you basically have to run off and find things or shoot things. The game boils down to going here, reading this text and then going over there collecting and shooting things before going back and reading more text. It is not involving or captivating in any way what so ever- it is tedious, boooooooooooring and repetitive- lacking imagination completely. The multiplayer seems really cool at first but it really isn't- once three other people of a higher level join your game expect to die a lot, respawn shoot something for ages, die, respawn, shoot things- yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn. I'm not averse to a shoot em up at all, but it has to be dynamic and have something special about to be gripping- this game is just rather dull and disappointing. Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Bioshock 1 & 2 these games outclass Boredomlands completely and provide a few good reasons to avoid it- but there are many reasons to be honest.

- Boring
- Repetitive
- Lame story driven by reading dull passages of text

I disagree. This game does not 'try' to be like Fallout 3.

Think Diablo people...imagine that...with all it's exploration and item gathering...looking for better weapons and armor and taking on loads of enemies.

Only you are playing in a Mad Max world (similar to Fallout 3 in looks ONLY) with guns and other futuristic weaponary.

This game should not compare to Modern Warfare, I'm tired of hearing people mention this comparison...It's like saying Diablo is Like Dragon Age...LOL.

This is an RPG with 'realtime' combat.

I do however agree that the story is could be a lot more involving so this reviewer doesn't have a completely different opinion to my own.

Ben Kelly says:
I didn't really mean to compare it to Modern Warfare 2 like for like as yes, it isn't really comparable, but I kind of just meant with all the other quality games available both new and old- this really is not something to get excited about. I had been led to believe it was and found it hugely disappointing. So many better quality games to spend your money on though.

I'm not saying it was really trying to be Fallout 3 but the setting is certainly a take off of it and i'm certain they thought they could grab some of the same market. It looks like Fallout 3 but in a comic book style- as for the Mad Max thing, Mad Max was one of the major influences on Fallout. In the first two games you even get to wear a copy of the jacket he wears. I didn't go into the game expecting it to be like Fallout 3 at all but I didn't expect it to be so flat either. It has a similar setting to Fallout but no substantial story, characterisation, interesting enemies or anything to make it rise above the blandness. The 'story' and 'characters' just serve as a superficial way to link reasons for you to shoot this and shoot that... It shouldn't really be called an RPG, just because you level up it's an RPG all of a sudden- I never felt much like was in a role or involved in a character. Assigning a few skill points here and there isn't much in the way of character customisation. It's just a mindless shoot em up to be fair, which can be great, but this isn't.

Anyway, it's all a matter of opinion- if you like the game then enjoy it I say! Lots of people are evidently. I expected to like it which probably added to my disappointment when I realised some way into playing that I actually really didn't. You can't win 'em all!

I agree with a lot of those points.

I think it's strong point is playing with friends online. If you play single player you soon realise it does become a bit mindless - you are killing the same things over and over. It would have done much better to actually have a solid storyline.

As a single player I don't play it much but as a multiplayer I play it whenever my friends are online playing it.
