4.0 out of 5 stars Samsung F4 EcoGreen 2TB 32MB 5400RPM 3.5 inch SATA-II Internal Hard Drive - OEM, 3 Feb. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Samsung F4 EcoGreen 2TB 32MB 5400RPM 3.5 Inch SATA-II Internal Hard Drive - 3 Year Warranty - OEM (Personal Computers)
This is a pretty decent HDD, but is marred by one issue...

Pros-

*Quiet.
*Runs quite cool.
*Good value for money.

Cons-

There is only really one con to this drive, and that is that older versions shipped with a faulty firmware. This meant that if the S.M.A.R.T. "Identify device" command was issued while data was being written to the drive, a loss of data occurred. As Samsung failed to change the version number on the new firmware that they released, it is impossible to tell which version you have. I have e-mailed Samsung, and they assure me that any drives with a build date after 11-2010 will have the new firmware pre-installed, which mine did.

As all 3 drives I ordered were built on 12-2010, I think Amazon may have cleared their old stock, so you will probably be ok with buying one.

Other than this issue, the drive is excellent.

Good, knowledgeable, well balanced and sensible comment. If only all customer comments were as meaningful!

For everyone's benefit. I don't think that Amazon HAS cleared their backlog as of the 28th Feb when I ordered this drive. My drive has only just failed as of 02/07/2011. I have been using two drives in my DS211J in RAID0 at least I still have the data on my mirror okay. Will definitely update the firmware but check with Amazon before ordering any of these drives!

Synology quote the following version numbers of this drive as requiring a firmware update for the DS411J
xxxxxxxZ7xxxxx, xxxxxxxZ8xxxxx,xxxxxxxZ9xxxxx,xxxxxxxZAxxxxx, or xxxxxxxZBxxxxx

Hi, I found the update file at this URL.
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/faqView.do?b2b_bbs_msg_id=386
I hope the link works for you but check that it is the correct one for YOUR model number of drive.
If not, look down the page to where it states in grey writing "next" and "Previous" click on the previous and you will find another file for different drive models.
Keep clicking on the available pages until you find the correct version for your particular hard drive model.
Cheers,
George B.

Many thanks Mr Turner for this review. I have a Rev A drive I use in a media centre. It started given me trouble yesterday (for the first time) when I tried uploading my back up data to it. It just stopped copying - no error message after a couple of minutes. Tried several times and even did a full NTFS format (took about 6 hours!). Not happened before but I think that may have been because I had the "Smart Drive" option switched off in BIOS previously. I downloaded the F/W from the Samsung link published elsewhere, created a bootable DOS USB stick and it updated no problem. All seems to be working great now. I was about to confine the drive to the bin so thanks again.
