Stick with it...,

This review is from: The Black Guard (The Long War 1) (Kindle Edition)
The Black Guard takes a while to get going and I confess I nearly gave up on it. The writing in the early part seems rather more stilted than later on. However, as the story is revealed it becomes a real page-turner.
The world is not terribly original, a bit of a mishmash of Norse, Mediaeval and Saracen with some Lovecraft thrown in. However, it all hangs together and the Lovecraftian element works and does add something new for heroic fantasy.
The characters are well-drawn and engaging; sometimes Smith draws out revealing their background and character - which works well.
It's a gritty one, with plenty of death, disembowelment and swearing. Smith is not afraid to kill off important characters. However, it lacks (fortunately) the moral bleakness that is currently fashionable.
All in all I am very much looking forward to the follow-up. At the current price it's a steal.

Thank you for your review; have been debating about this one for a while now. But the size of it (love the big weighty tomes) and the more positive reviews convinced me to order.
