5.0 out of 5 stars A sleeper hit, 30 Jan 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Middle: Complete First Season [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
I was pretty disappointed when Neil Flynn left Scrubs (just one of many reasons the ninth season is so bad), but he is definitely at his best in this show. Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond, Back to You) is also excellent in it. I would actually rate it a little higher than Modern Family, as the documentary style of that show grates at times. Also, while the characters in Modern Family might be "modern", they're not typical, unlike the Hecks.

Not sure I like the tone of this comment. You prefer your comedy with all white, heterosexual characters? What's wrong with multicultural marriages, step-families and homosexuals? The core issues people face are the same. The sooner people see the commonality that makes us the same, the sooner people will stop judging people for being different.

I don't think that's what the reviewer meant at all. I assumed what he meant (and I agree) is that The Middle portrays the true chaos and day-to-day issues of the average middle class family. Modern Family does express some of those themes, but the setting of upper middle class LA and the somewhat over the top characters make it feel too polished and hard to relate to at times. It's overly self-aware, I think. The cleverness of the punch lines is the most important thing, and that can distance the viewer. The Middle is different. The characters, dialogue, pace of storytelling... It all just has a much more humble honesty that really strikes a chord.
