This review is from: Berwald : Complete Symphonies (Audio CD)
I wanted to buy these recordings a few years back when first released on the Chandos label, but because I was on a tight budget I didn't bother, now Brilliant Classics have released the same recordings the only difference being the price.
As for the music these symphonies are by far in my opinion the greatest romantic symphonies written by a Swede although they don't rank as high in my opinion as the symphonies by Brahms Mendelssohn Tchaikovsky etc.
Berwald learned his art in a musically conservative Sweden, and the originality of his invention aside, he had essentially a classical artistic temperament - no emotional excess, no "sensitive" melancholy. His music speaks directly, even roughly, more witty than passionate or tender. Sometimes one hears ghosts of Beethoven, sometimes adumbrations of Mendelssohn, Wagner, and even Nielsen (an admirer, by the way).
