Very good SS lists,
This review is from: River of Heroes: Battles on the Vistula, Operation Bagration (Paperback)Flames of War
Having been a wargamer now for over 25 years the table top game Flames of War has taken me by surprise and outclasses all other games in the field. Of course it helps that I am also an armchair general with great interest in military history. The better you know the history the more fun the game is and the better you know the game the more sense military history becomes. For newcomers this book is not a complete game in itself, the game is played with minatures and you will need the core rulebook Flames of War - but if minature wargaming is your thing - then this is the best game I have played.
River of Heroes
- Sees the closing of Bagration, the Great Soviet Summer Offensive of 1944. The title refers to the spearhead of the Soviet forces and the new formations sent to stop them at the Vistula and Bug Rivers near Warsaw - hence the RIver of Heroes.
The book contains several intersting lists to construct forces from, you have specialised Soviet Sapper Battalions, Heavy Assault Battalions and the first Soviet regular army tank force to utilise the new T-34/85 exclusively. On the German side you have the list to field either 3 SS Totenkopf or 5. SS Wiking Divisional forces and then a new King Tiger Company. Out of the whole I found the SS lists most useful and am already making a army out of the WIking list, where the SS remain high spirited but their quality is less than before on account of new reinforcements and lack of training. For me this has been the most tempting list in a while.

Am writing this comment to thank you for going to the trouble of reviewing River of Heroes. I have been considering buying it for some time, and on the strength of your review I shall. The main problem with internet shopping is that buyers have to literally judge a book by it's cover, and reviews are invaluable for dealing with this problem.
P.S. I am also in the process of putting together a Flames of War SS battalion.
