Once you get used to the author's style, the characters here develop beautifully along with ideas and mesmerising, and often hilarious, dialogue. This is a drama and a thriller and a comedy and a crime novel all in one, encompassing all of life's big ideas; religion, politics, scientific discovery, the cosmos, and more. It's about imperfect human beings and their motivations. It's about how people are essentially good and essentially bad at the same time. It's about dreams and nightmares, love and hurt, successes and failures. Passages will stay with you and some you will want to memorise, especially some of the one-liners (....a detective? He couldn't detect a frog that landed on his head and took a shit...."). I highly recommend it.
