A Killer Cilla Compilation,
This review is from: Completely Cilla [1963-1973] [DVD Included] (Audio CD)This wonderful CD-DVD collection really shows just what an under-rated singer Our Cilla is. A magnificent set that shows her at her very best. If you're thinking of buying this, do yourself a favour and just BUY IT. Easily the best Cilla collection to date. You can tell it's a real labour of love. Everything Cilla did with George Martin between 1963 and 1973 in chronological order spread over 5 CDs. All her A sides, B sides, Ep's, Album tracks and other rarities. The stand out tracks to me are 'Liverpool Lullaby', 'Where Is Tomorrow', McCartney's 'Junk', Lennon & Ono's 'Oh My Love' and the fabulously camp 'Follow Me'.
The bee in the bonnet however is the amazing DVD featuring approx 20 previously unreleased recordings mainly from her own 'Cilla' TV show. We see Cilla in the 60's when her dresses didn't dare get any shorter and into the 70's with chokers and frocks down to her ankles. Yet, it's that voice that gets you. Don't just remember the 'foghorn' effect she's remembered for in 'Anyone Who Had A Heart', most of this collection shows how versatile her voice was and how beautiful she sounds when she sings softly.
The only thing I can fault this collection on is the ommission of the greatest Cilla performance yet to see a release on DVD. Where is that fabulous duet of 'Life's A Gas' with Marc Bolan?
The booklet says it's a precursor to her 50th anniversary in showbusiness next year, so let's hope for her entire 'Cilla' shows to be released on DVD in a giant boxed set. 'Cilla' Uncut on DVD next please.
But for now this will do very nicely indeed.

Yes I agree. It would be nice to have the old Cilla shows but I think a number of them were overwritten by the BBC. Failing that it would be good to have all the EMI albums released on one collection 1974 onwards.

CIlla's albums were planned for release on cd some years ago but EMI changed their minds and only released them as downloads.
We have had entire back catalogues on cd from Dusty, Petula, Sandie and Kiki so what was the problem when it came to Cilla?

Mr. K says:
All of Cilla's albums were issued worldwide on download with digital booklets. Each booklet includes Q&As with Cilla. I believe this has not been done with Cilla's girl-singer peers. EMI may well re-issue the albums but it all depends on the market as CD sales are seriously on the decline and retailers do tend to dictate what they think will sell best.
My advice is support the boxset and who knows what will follow ;)

I must agree! Probably one of my favourite clips (and memories) of all time, Cilla's duet with Marc Bolan Life's a Gas. Such a moving clip as well. Saw Cilla once and she said she still has that pink feather boa that Marc took off and wrapped around her neck at the end of the performance. Pure TV gold... But as footstomper says, it certainly will not put me off buying this. A question: does anyone know if these discs include all of her album material from 63-73? Thanks in advance for your help.
