Complex, detailed, deep... but also no fun for the uninitiated,

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
It's difficult for me to try and write an objective review for a genre of game that I don't typically play but because I ordered this through Vine I am required to review this product (yes, it's one of those reviews that most non-Vine customers love to hate), albeit my comments being much delayed from other Vine reviews on here. It should be noted that I have played some of the more mainstream strategy games in the past, including such RTS games as Total War and Age of Empires, and I have been a huge fan of the Command & Conquer games of old but, truth be told, I have struggled with games offering a much deeper level of strategy and much more complex user interface - this is where I obviously fall short with regards to this game. I find the interface too complex, the strategy and planning involved too banal, and the overall presentation fails to inspire me. The tutorial wasn't particularly helpful and my enjoyment quickly waned - in short, the learning curve was just too steep for me.
If you have more than a passing interest in American history and are a fan of strategy titles such as this then you could do much worse because it is a very detailed game. This is very much a niche title in many respects and will only appeal to a specific target audience. Most of my negative comments towards the game are down to my own short-comings in this genre - you could argue a lack of patience and understanding on my part - but, put simply, the game is not forgiving to those less initiated to detailed strategy games. If you're also relatively inexperienced with strategy games then you could find this game as inaccessible as I did.
