Mircosoft LifeCam HD-5001,
This review is from: Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000 (Accessory)
Bought this camera from [...] on a whim for [...]. I'm both a Mac and PC user. Works fine with both. I won't go on about the PC side as the software installs automatically with Windows 7 when its plugged in, so I'll concentrate on the Mac side.
It's detected fine, works with Photobooth and QuickTime X, records good quality video, though the file sizes from QT are large, nay, huge, but that's to be expected. The picture is stretched in Photobooth, but I strongly suspect this is Photobooth rather than the WebCam. I also installed the SpyCam software (trial) and the camera works fine with that as well, so I may use it as a CCTV camera occassionally.
The picture quality is very good with nice colours and sharpness, much better than the built in iSight on my MacBook Pro (and MacBook Air), though the autofocus can take a little while to settle.
Have not yet tested it with Skype or anything else, but looking forward to doing so.
The camera sits fine on the screens of the Mac's and my Alienware M11x R2, it doesn't wobble like I thought it would. One thing missing is a case, which is annoying. With the stand folded flat and the cable wrapped in the integral cable-tidy it can be stored in an old Oakley sunglasses microfibre softcase, a bonus of this is you've always got something on hand to clean the lens and the laptop screen.
At the price its a good bit of kit.
