This review is from: Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
I was always going to be a bit biased being a Warhammer 40000 nut. I read all the novels.
But, this is a good game. It feels like you're on a planet of the Imperium. The graphics are superb, I think, with very detailed Marines in the Blue and gold of the Ultramarines. There is a real sense of scale with huge buildings full of gothic architecture.
You play Captain Titus of the Ultramarines. It's a non descript company ( there are no company colours on the armour! ) that's sent as the vanguard to an Imperial invasion to reclaim a forge world.
This game is full of action with intense gun battles and pounding melee combat all rolled into one. Great selection of weapons which are released gradually through the game.
The controls are easy to master and the switching from Chainsword to say, Bolter is seamless as claimed.
There's a good story and excellent short cutscenes to push the game along. You do identify with Titus. There's a lot of Ork enemies with you often being swamped before you can reload so you have to use your chainsword, power axe etc...
Nemeroth the Chaos Marine vying for daemonhood is one scary bastard. Really effective and well drawn. As is the Ork Leader. Everything is on a grand scale.
Great set pieces such as the flight on the Valkyries, the bridge attack with Blood Ravens etc...
I like the 3rd person viewpoint.
All in all I think THQ have made a very good game indeed.
A few minor niggles:
Could be a tad longer.
No Mechanicus to speak of on a forge world... shame that.
A round on a Space Hulk maybe? That relly is a minor niggle though.
I've played it twice and will keep it because I love the Warhammer universe and this is possibly one of the best games I've played in a long time. It's non stop action that had my girlfriend stopping to watch with amazement at the sheer violence and visceral action.
