Why it has taken me so long to discover Webb Pierce will remain a mystery, but if you love honky tonk country style of the 50s and 60s, and the likes of Hank Williams, Kitty Wells, Merle Haggard, Hank Thompson et al then buy a copy now! A chance viewing of the 2006 remake of the Wes Craven film The Hills Have Eyes on TV caught my attention, when the opening soundtrack had a song playing that I could not get out of my head, but I had never heard before. After a quick lyric search this turned out to be "More and More" by Webb Pierce, and Amazon did the rest as efficiently as always! That is the stand out track for me, along with the "Oh, So Many Years" duet with Kitty Wells, but there are no bad tracks across the three CDs.
An amazingly successful artist even by the country standards of the day, charting more number one hits than any other artist in the 1950s. Add in his pair of silver dollar lined convertible automobiles, guitar shaped swimming pool and colourful embroidered and rhinestone covered "Nudie suits" and you have a fascinating character, as well as some great music mixing in all the country music themes of too much booze, too many women and too many tears.
