Not another Dog in the Night-time,
This review is from: A Spot of Bother (Paperback)
I chose this book on the strength of the excellent 'Curious Incident...' and having heard some good reviews of it. However, this is not up to the same standard as the 'Curious Incident...'. The writing style is original and witty, but not witty enough to relieve the dreariness of the subject matter. I understand that there are those who do enjoy a certain kind of comedy that is obsessed with self mutilation, vomiting, an excess of gay sex, frequent visits to the toilet, depression, and people with few if any redeeming features generally behaving badly. Well, good luck to them; they may enjoy this book.

I too expected more after 'Curious Incident' but found this book dreary. I don't want to read about disfunctional relationships and obsessive behaviour. I didn't finish it, despite needing to read it for a reading group. I will be careful when selecting another Mark Haddon.
