SURPRISINGLY GOOD REMAKE....,
This review is from: My Bloody Valentine 3D (Limited Edition) [DVD] (DVD)
This is one of the better remakes of a very underrated original movie.
The characters were well drawn, the pacing was good with real tension and the movie really delivered on the gore front with an attempt to not overkill on the CG and instead create gore fx with the still more effective techniques of prosthetics/animatronics. The deaths are on the whole convincing with a 100 ways to kill someone with a pick axe being high on the agenda! The killer has a great look with the gas mask with headlight and black boiler suit etc that makes him look like an inhuman killing machine. The mine locations work well but perhaps not as effectiveley as in the 1981 movie which had a more gritty, grainy, claustrophobic feel probably owing to it's modest budget. This movie is very slick in terms of lighting, editing and cinematography. Always liked these small town America locales as well for these movies - just more atmospheric with the mine & forests etc.
There's a great twist at the end(absent from MBV 1981) and a possibility of a sequel.
Female full frontal nudity; oh yes, totally gratuitous, rather lengthy & lingering - and in this movie, very welcome! C'mon guys - fess up!
Interesting to see the body burned in tumble dryer scene rebooted in this movie - it's a scene nearly always omitted from the 1981 cut so it was welcome here. Incidentally, you can find that cut scene from the original on YouTube.
An enjoyable movie BUT pass on the 3D to start with; it works to a degree but you lose all the colour, apart from red & green, and a lot of definition as well. My advice is to watch the standard 2D version (it's a flipper disc) and enjoy the movie as a regular feature. Then play about with the reverse side and have a look at the 3D fx whenever. Watch it 3D for the first time of viewing and you will be distracted and actually 'miss' the movie! Anyway, the choice is yours - just my pov.
