Great noise cancelling, slightly compromised sound,

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have so far been put off noise cancelling headphones by the fact that the noise cancelling technology is often included in the connection wire and concerns about overall build quality.
At present, I have been using my Creative Aurvana Live Headphones, which provide excellent sound fidelity for at home use.
Although close backed they have proven themselves more or less useless in filtering sound on railway journeys or flights etc., however, and I use in-ear buds for everything else.
Considering that both retail for roughly the same price I was not expecting particularly great things from this set of headphones.
First impressions are very good. The headphones are very well packaged and come with adapters for both large phono and aeroplane use. These adapters look and feel very good quality and they are clearly not an afterthought.
In addition, the lead is separate from the phones. Apart from the extra flexibility this provides (I have had to throw headphones/earbuds away in the past because the lead has become damaged) this means that you can use the noise cancelling features of the headphones without having the lead trailing off of them. The advantages of this may not be readily apparent, but if you are in an environment where you would like some peace without the bother of a lead this is a real boon.
The sound is not up to the standard of the Creative phones. It lacks subtlety and bass and is quite biased toward middle frequencies. It is a tight sound, however, and the phones feel comfortable if a little heavy.
Testing the Creatives and the blackbox headphones in a quite room and you would prefer the Creatives every time.
Use the same phones in a loud environment, however, and it becomes obvious why the blackbox have a punchy middle. When taken together with the remarkably efficient sound cancellation you have a way of listening to even quite subtle music or games in very loud environments.
Even loud talking is cut down significantly by the noise cancellation technology.
You can use the headphones without the noise cancellation active but the sound is rather muddy and muted.
It's a case of horses for courses. If you are sat at home in a quite room then you do not need these headphones.
If, however, you spend time in any sort of noisy environment, on trains or aeroplanes or in a noisy office even, then you should buy these headphones.
