Strange psychological horror from Hammer!,
This review is from: Demons of the Mind [DVD] (DVD)
In this gothic psychological horror, Robert Hardy keeps his incestuous children Shane Briant (in his debut film appearance) and Gillian Hills locked away because they suffer from hereditary insanity whilst girls from the neighbouring areas are being murdered then covered in red flower petals. Are the children really insane? What is the father's role in their insanity. Who is the murderer?
In the early seventies Hammer wished to move away from rather straight gothic horror to films with more psychological themes. 'Bad blood' is a good premise but the film is all rather strange throughout but still highly enjoyable. One asks 'what is going on?' during the first half of the film but personally this was an attraction. Sometimes a pretentious script, Robert Hardy's over-acting, the superfluous appearance of Michael Horden's priest and a bizarre unhappy ending does not ruin the enjoyment.
Being a Shane Briant fan, perhaps I'm a little biased.
