1.0 out of 5 stars A complete waste of time, 23 Aug 2011
This review is from: The Tree of Life [DVD] (DVD)
Undoubtedly the worst film I've ever had to endure, pretentious, plotless and mind-numbingly boring, I can't believe anyone could actually enjoy watching this rubbish. I'm sure some introspective, pretentious "intellectuals" will rave about how deep and meaningful this film is but don't listen to them - it's dreadful. I've never seen so many people get up and walk out of a cinema during a film before. Avoid like the plague. You have been warned!

If it's so terrible I'm wondering why Robert De Niro's jury voted it best film at Cannes? Shame you didn't stick to reviewing the film rather than slagging off people who like it?

Probably because they 're also a load of pretentious plonkers, Mr Onion.

I so agree with you, I was one of the people who wanted to walk out after 20 excruciating minutes but was forced to stay by my companion who wanted to see how it "ended". What a banal, pretentious, boring waste of perfectly good film-stock.

It isn't rubbish; indeed it is the most astonishing and beautiful evening I have ever spent in a cinema, and I've spent many. Mizoguchi's Sanso Dayu is the only close contender. I teach Film Studies, and yes I have a doctorate. Clearly you didn't like the film, but don't elevate that dislike into an ill-informed misjudgement. It just makes you look unintelligent.

I suppose it's subjective then. Some people might think it's brilliant, some will hate it with a vengeance. Personally I haven't got time to waste watching pretentious, naval gazing "meaningful" (Ha!) tripe like this waste of celluloid. Each to their own....

You have a Doctorate, well done. Don't know quite why you felt the need to share that with us, as if it is supposed to make your opinion of the film any more valid. Clearly you liked the film, but don't elevate that dislike into some kind of omnipotent sermon. It just makes you look arrogant and foolish.

Agreed, beautiful. Never seen so many similar comments revealing an inferiority complex. Why get angry? Sad.
