A Slip By The God Of 'FuŁk',
This review is from: The Golden Age of Grotesque (Audio CD)
I have been a Marilyn Manson fan for the last 7-8 years. Expectations were high for this album which I was avidly looking forward to. However, I am sorry to say that GAOG has fallen short of these expectations. I'm not saying it's a trash-no-good-at-all album, but for the man whose mission is to shock and rock, I expected more. In fact both 'Holy Wood' and 'Mechanical Animals' are much, much better albums.
Most impressive tracks on the album are the two singles released so far, 'Mobscene' and 'This is the new Shit' together with '(s)AINT' and the excellent cover version of Soft Cell's 80's classic 'Tainted Love'. For the rest most tracks lack the spark MM usually gives to his songs ... both lyrically and musically. Other songs lack melody full stop.
To sum up things, as a MM fan I don't regret buying this album. After 3 or 4 listens, it will go down much better, but if you like Marilyn Manson, and you'd like to own some work of his, start off by busying the blistering, horrifying 'Antichrist Superstar' or his most recent works, 'Mechanical Animals' (a collection of pure rock anthems) or the remarkable 'Holy Wood'.
