Pining For The Past,
This review is from: Beautiful Rewind (Audio CD)
Believe it or not, this is Kieran Hebden's seventh studio album under the guise of the seminal Four Tet brand.
As the title suggested (and the advance single 'Kool FM' confirmed) Kieran takes us on a nostalgia tour of UK bass music; inspired by a combination of pure reminiscence and also time in the studio with Burial.
The result is analogous to the sound of neurons re-firing in the brain old memories of a fuzzy pirate radio station. It's an uncharacteristically gritty and often dark affair that proves Kieran isn't worried to try out new things.
Ironically however, this isn't of course new. In fact there are a lot of other artists pushing future garage and bass music very steadily indeed. Avid fans of Four Tet will also be themselves yearning for the past for the classic symphonic tapestries of Rounds or Everything Ecstatic - they are left wanting.
Pleasingly, the production quality remains high. And it is testament to Kieran's ability that even when trying new sounds and techniques he still manages to maintain a unique artistry that remains ultimately satisfying.
