An Excellent Collection of an Exceptional Writer's Work,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Delphi Complete Works of Katherine Mansfield (Illustrated) (Kindle Edition)
This e-book edition of the complete works of the modernist writer, Katherine Mansfield, who in her short life attained the reputation as one of the most talented writers of the modern short story, is exceptional value. As shown on Amazon's information page, this edition contains not just the complete short stories, but also includes Mansfield's poetry and her non-fiction works, including her wonderful journal where we can experience the author's thoughts and feelings. Katherine Mansfield was an innovative and perceptive writer, whose stream of consciousness style narrative enabled her to show the complexities, eccentricities and vulnerabilities of her characters and of their inner lives. Virginia Woolf, one of the great modernist writers herself, admired and envied Katherine Mansfield's work and admitted in her diaries that she was jealous of Mansfield's writing - the only writing she had ever been jealous of. Like Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield was not so much interested in what happens to her characters, as in how those characters feel and, with the use of intensely lyrical prose, Mansfield's emphasis was, therefore, on constructing her characters' thoughts and their inner lives rather than on plot development, and this style of writing was particularly successful for her short story writing.
I shall be honest and say that, having read a large amount of Katherine Mansfield's work over the years, I have not felt the need to read through this entire e-book from start to finish yet - but from what I have read, I can say that the formatting appears very good, the illustrations and photographs are clearly reproduced, there is a helpful introduction to the short stories and some of the other works, and this edition also contains images of Mansfield's books when they were first printed, which is a very nice touch. Also included in this e-book is the first biography of Katherine Mansfield by her husband, John Middleton Murry - and, although I have read Jeffrey Meyer's biography: Katherine Mansfield: A Darker View and I have also read and enjoyed Claire Tomalin's: Katherine Mansfield: A Secret Life, I have not yet read this first biography and I am looking forward to doing so. Although I shall still be keeping my hardback editions by and about the author on my bookshelves (and if I am entirely honest, would always choose a 'real' book over an e-book) it is wonderful to know that I have such a large collection of Mansfield's marvellous writing readily to hand on my Kindle.
