Combines erudition with wit and musical taste,
This review is from: The Times Opera Notes (Hardcover)Robert Thicknesse's "Opera Notes" add modern sensibility and wit to a highly readable interpretation of the operatic classics. Far from the pretentiousness with with opera is usually surrounded, he proceeds from an erudite introduction to a wealth of musicological, historical, dramatic and biographical footnotes to the operatic canon. The "crush-bar gambits", maybe designed as an antidote to the tedious summaries of plot which face most opera listeners, may serve very well as chat-up lines, but they also provide a hugely enjoyable summary of an opera's historical context and its modern interpretation.
I will consult this book whenever in future I visit or listen to an opera.
