Way over hyped: good concept but badly written.,
This review is from: American Gods (Paperback)
The idea behind this book is smart, the author's style certainly isn't. I mean come on, a two year old could think of better main character names than Shadow and Wednesday, and the names are no deeper than the characters themselves.
I was unlucky enough to read the 'author's preferred text' version and in the introduction it states its longer than the original - that's a bad thing. The first two thirds of the book take far too long to set the scene for an only 'ok' final third. What's more they are interspersed with several flash-back scene setting interludes, two of which are frankly inappropriate and dont fit at all with the rest of the novel, I can only hope the editors left them out of the 1st edition!
Expected far more given the accolades, which I can only guess were awarded based on the originality of the concept and nothing more.
