1)Peri compares her stitching to that of Baron Frankenstein.
2)Peri also compares Vlad and Radu to Beauty and the Beast.
3)The Doctor quotes Omar Khayyám.
4)The Doctor tells Peri that he once encountered vampires "with fangs and bats & everything". (Tv: State of Decay)
5)Erimem is still learning English from Peri & is now reasonably proficient in written English. Peri began teaching her friend English in The Axis of Insanity which continued in The Roof of the World.
6)The Sixth Doctor would later meet Dracula's fictional vampire namesake in the Land of Fiction. (Audio: Legend of the Cybermen).
The year is 1462 & the Fifth Doctor, Peri & Erimem materializes in the Tardis in the ruins of a small village, Disgusted by the smell, they find the village burned & the livestock slaughtered.
The people were impaled & left to die by Vlad the Impaler who since his father's murder has another name.
When this was released I read many reviews praising this story & was intrigued that the Doctor was going to share a adventure piting himself against Dracula I couldn't wait to here it.
My excitement soon turned to boredom as Son Of The Dragon after a strong start doesn't really go anywhere which is surprising as writer Steve Lyons usually writes good Doctor Who audio dramas.
The story itself focuses on the war between Vlad & his estranged brother Radu `the Handsome' while Peri instantly sees Dracula as a "baddie" Erimem judges both Vlad & Radu as equals rather than by assume Peri's holier than thou attitude while Erimem is not only to forgive Vlad's sadistic flaws she actually starts to fall in love with him.
Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor is again not given enough to do throughout this 2 hour audio adventure & seems to have been sidelined in favour of companion Erimem who is the main focus of her relationship with Dracula in this adventure & seemingly has more to do & judging by how this adventure ends hints that the Erimem character won't be staying around for to much longer.
The production values are as great as ever from Big Finish but the big problem with this story is that it is another straight historical character study & the third to feature this Tardis trio which foregos any horror element playing instead on the character drama & could've featured a completely different villian than Dracula who is vastly underwritten & does very little throughout the play apart from shout about how he despises his brother Radu & wants Erimem as his bride which is a waste of actor James Purefoys talent who is perfect vocally for this role & gives a believable performance as Vlad The Impaler (Dracula) & for that adds a extra star to this review.
Overall if you want a historical audio adventure of the Dracula myth chances are you'll enjoy this adventure so feel free to add a extra star to this review.
However if like me you wanted a more gothic hammer horror type audio adventure then you may find Son Of The Dragon to be a huge disappointment.
