A slow descend into oblivion,
This review is from: The Last Airbender [Blu-ray] [Region Free] (Blu-ray)
From 1998 The Sixth Sense - to 2013 - After Earth - Shyamalan's artistic career has gone down in an admirable steady curve. What is even more astounding is that most of his films were commercial successes, from out-of-cost to blockbuster stratosphere, reminding this reviewer that by far most films are a product, not an artistic endeavour. Take "The Last Airbender", yet another avatar movie. But where Cameron succeeded - as almost no other director has in the 3-D world - Shyamalan has failed in every department but that of the money-makers. What disappoints me the most is that this director has such great cultural if not spiritual resources at his disposal like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata or buddhistic history, but he ends up with a dismal disneyfied universum where platitudes and "meaningful" asides have taken over even the rudiments of storytelling. This concoction of - admittedly - breathtaking CGI moments, atrocious acting and the worst musical score this side of Victoriana is not written or directed for adults, not even for children, but for morons who have shelled out money for the tickets or DVD. I know, because I was one of them.
How I would like Shyamalan coming to his sixth senses. Well, we can dream...
