Boring but gr8 laptop,
This review is from: Samsung Series 5 NP530U4C 14 inch Ultrabook - Silver (Intel Core i5 3317UM 1.7GHz, 6Gb RAM, 500Gb HDD, DVD SuperMulti DL, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Integrated Graphics, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) (Personal Computers)
I bought it in the summer when Samsung were offering £100 cashback. Picked it up from J Lewis (sorry Amazon) for £799. So if you buy it here (£619), it's cheaper even without the discount!
Good points: Rock solid reliability, quick startup with its cached drive (about 15s from power on to login, another 10s to desktop), fan is very quiet. Haven't heard it switch to overdrive yet, unlike my old Sony Vaio, which sounded like it was about to take off. Currently watching TV in background and cannot hear anything from laptop apart from clacking of keys. Screen is matte. You'll either love it or loathe it. If you use laptop outdoors it might suit you; not so good if you like viewing pictures or watching DVDs, catch up TV on BBC iplayer, youtube etc. Battery life (currently 4 months old) is very good- can get about 4-5h before needing a recharge. I run Windows 7 and MS Office 2010 and it is absolutely fine- I just want an unobtrusive machine.
Bad points: Advertised as an ultrabook, but it is HEAVY. Wouldn't recommend carrying it about- suggest you buy its smaller brother without DVD drive and touchscreen (Samsung NP540U3C-A01 Ultrabook, Intel Core i5, 1.7GHz, 6GB RAM, 500GB, 13.3" Touchscreen; 1.4kg). If I had the chance to swop, I would probably go for the latter, but not with Windows 8. But that is for another review...
