Good Camera but TERRIBLE battery life,
This review is from: Canon IXUS 1000 HS Digital Camera (High Sensitivity 10 Megapixel, 10x Zoom, 3.0 inch LCD Screen) - Brown (Camera)
I had this camera a week, and while it is an amazing piece of technology, it is crippled with an awful battery. It takes a good while to charge the battery (1.5 hours and 2 hours for the first two charges).
First charge lasted just 80 shots (flash used on only 2 of them) and 3 small (sub 2 minute) videos. This was a mixture of testing low light (but not using flash) and a video of full zoom out and back in again.
The second charge lasted 112 shots, but that was testing out the burst mode.
I have done 2 futher charges that again lasted between 80 and 120 shots, with very little use of flash. So its being Returned to Amazon.
This camera would be ideal for a travel camera if not for the battery life, when you set off in the morning for a day sight seeing, you want to have confidence that the battery will still have charge by lunchtime. The pics and Video it creates are amazing, the zoom is beautiful and the build quality is great. But its useless if you can only use it for a few shots or a couple of hours. In these days of 32GB cards which hold thousands of photos, its mad to launch a camera that cant even fill a 2GB card on its Battery.

It can take quite a few charge, discharge cycles before the battery gets to its best more than three. it also depends how long you have the screen on composing or reviewing the shots, and fiddling with the menu.

I used the camera for over a week, charged and discharged many times, only mentioned the first 3 on the initial review.
This was my 6th Ixus (in the family not all mine) including the very first one, and the battery life was Significantly worse than the last 4 cameras, equal to the 2nd generation Ixus and only just beat the original Ixus.
The battery life never improved greatly as the week went on, and screen use was just normal setup shot and review afterwards.
It is a great camera, but to squeeze it into such a small package they have had to fit a very small battery and it just isnt upto the job.
I do hope they they release either a better battery or do a redesign for the next release.

yep the battery life is awful, that is why I carry 2 spare ones all the time...
to compromise battery life for extra features is in my opinion rendering the unit next to useless in terms of usage.
apart from this it is near perfect in operation with superb results and of course HD TV perfect

I made the mistake of buying this camera.
I can confirm that the battery is a big mistake on Canon's part.
Pity: the movie mode is one of the best you'll see for a small camera.

Thanks for the review and for the warning about battery! I recently went into an electronics shop on Oxford Street and they showed me this camera with demonstration and tried their best to lure me into buying it. I almost bought it but then something at the back of my mind told me not to - I wasn't quite convinced that so many features can be wonderfully packed into such a small equipment. Something had to be amiss. After reading your review it seems I was right! Thanks.

Come on! If you're serious about photography you take a couple of charged batteries with you.
