Don't Look Away,
This review is from: DON'T LOOK AWAY - A Thrilling Suspense Novel (Veronica Sloan Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
Set in Washington, DC, this thriller is set in a futuristic world where every citizen is implanted with a microchip and every police officer has to be in uniform. A bomb under the White House in 2017 did severe damage, killing the then President, and now there is a backlash against microchips on privacy grounds.
Veronica Sloan has another implant - part of the Optical Evidence Programme, meaning that she will be able to read visual evidence stored in implants in others. One of the people with this implant has been found murdered at the ruins of the White House. The assumption is that the killing had to be terrorist related. Security staff resent Veronica's presence and who had security clearance to pick off one woman involved in Optical project?
The Orwellian world created in the aftermath of the destruction of the White House builds on RFID technology used to identify animals and expensive retail products today. Because the book is set in the mid-2020s much is recognisable. I found the killing described very unpleasantly. We - through Veronica - are later forced to relive the victim's last moments. This does make the point that technology or not, people still have to do the unpleasant tasks. Looking through the dead woman's vision includes voyeurism. Veronica has co-workers who are supportive but she is not close to either of them, and she is not particularly feminine, which makes it harder to relate to her.
Those who really enjoy a gory thriller will like this better than I did.
