This review is from: La Fille Du Pharaon (The Pharaoh's Daughter) - Pugni/Lacotte/Bolshoi Ballet [DVD] (DVD)
For lover of classical ballet, this is a wonderful visual treat.
Excellent sets, Excellent Choreography, Excellent Dancing, and all those superlatives most of the reviewers have used here.
There is only one problem with this ballet, and that is eminently 'ho-hum' music (Like 'Prince of the Pagodas').
Ricardo Pugni has composed some dazzling pieces, but much of what composed was meant to just give an acceptable background score for the great choreographers (titans) of his day. It was meant to probably give the audience of those days a very lavish piece for the stage, supplemented so to say, by its music, unlike composers like Minkus or Delibes or of course, Tchaikovsky and Glazunov whose music comes by itself ahead of the splendid ballet.
I dont think you will ever get a pure music album like a 'Suite' from this or any of his other works. Even having seen this ballet at least 4 times, most of the music just refuses to 'stick'. On that count, I am more inclined to give this otherwise fantastic production, one star less.
All the same, it is a 'must-own' production for people like me, who worship ballet.
