This review is from: The Luminous Life of Lilly Aphrodite (Paperback)
After being sent several mediocre titles for the book club I run, the library provided this title for us to read. The main character, Lilly, is vividly brought to life and endearing. The book describes life in Berlin from the pre- war era to the Second World war. It is very well researched and shows how life must have been for many people at this time. It shows the desperate poverty and fight to survive alongside the desire to party hard to escape the tough realities of everday life. As The Third Reich comes to power the open, hedonisitic atmosphere of the town changes drastically with terrible consequences. Alongside this backdrop, Lilly and her best friend Hanne do what they can to survive. Lilly looks for love and support first from a nun at the orphanage, then in Hanne and later in her relationships. The two wars tear lives apart, but Lilly is a survivor. The book captures the excitement of a city where anything goes, the confusion and seperation of war and the terrible sadness of loss. Beautiful, exciting, poignant.
