Over the years, I've tended to treat picks as simple alternatives to using my thumb. It wasn't until I encountered the book 'Picks' by Will Hoover ...
Picks!: Colorful Saga of Vintage Celluloid Guitar Plectrums
that I started to think about them in more detail. Soon after, by coincidence, I needed to buy a couple of new picks, and decided to try something different. A 3mm pick was one of those and I was astonished by how much it affected and improved my playing. Obviously, this was just my respone and others might well not like them one little bit. What suits one person, won't necessarily suit another.
At 3mm, these 'stubby picks are definitely chunky, but the textured hollow on each side makes holding them a real pleasure. The thickness also makes them totally inflexible which helps me play faster and more accurately or - as I prefer - to play slowly and with more feeling. The connection with strings feels very positive and you can be both subtle and delicate on the top strings, and as beefy and doom-laden as you like on the bottom strings.
It's all a matter of feel and how you respond to that feel ... these have just been my reactions. Suffice to say, however, that I have now put all my other picks into a small plastic bag, labelled them, and donated them to a local charity shop. These 3mm picks suit my needs to perfection, so I'm ordering a few more just in case I lose some.
I've uploaded 5 images which will hopefully help you judge the size and usefulness of these larger stuuby-style picks.
