Great laptop for the price!,
This review is from: HP G62-105SA Laptop PC (15.6-inch LED Widescreen Display, Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Core i3 Processor i3-330M, 3 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, 802.11 b/g/n, Intel HD Graphics) (Electronics)
There is a similar laptop sold in the shops, such as Currys/Dixons and pcworld (the G62-17SA). Interestingly Amazon have the G62-105SA, which is cheaper and has better specifications.
I brought this laptop as i really needed a cheap laptop. Granted there are cheapers ones out there, and at this price range there are laptops from Samsung as well as Dell.
I spent a few days comparing such laptops, and this laptop came out on top. Why? i'll tell you why.
This laptop sports a 7200RPM hard drive, which is fast as usually at this price you'd be likely to get it, and only this laptop has that.
Also you get the latest processor, the Core i3 from Intel.
The screen is as good as everybody keeps saying, bearing it mind this is a cheap laptop and therefore im not comparing it to say Sony Vaio's F series.
You get a webcam WITH microphone, something some laptops dont have, such as Acer's cheaper models lack the microphone.
The keyboard does take some getting used to. As there is a column of shortcut keys on the left. So imagine the whole keyboard being shifted to the right, as a result you'll make some mistakes on it, as you press the caps lock key where the A button would be. The keyboard itself isnt the best in the world and it can at first glance feel cheap, but its comfortable, which is the main thing. Another issue with the keyboard is the rounded edges, which means the ESC, RIGHT ARROW and DELETE buttons are slighty smaller than normal, so you make need to readjust your fingers.
The whole laptop takes a page from Apples' Macbook design, and has gone down the classic route in terms of design. I really like the use of white lights for the cap lock key and the power key, as well as the hard drive light (located on the left corner). I really like the fact that they removed the normally green light on the power brick, however they put that light on the laptop itself, its on the right side where the power cable plugs in. As a result it stays on at all times, even when the laptop is off.
The biggest issue i guess would be the touchpad, there are no multitouch features, and the buttons are very hard to press. Also for some reason it doesnt feel accurate when scrolling or moving around. I suggest buying an external mouse.
One thing i didnt like is the power cable itself. Which is straight where it plugs into the laptop. Instead of being L shaped, which can cause an issue when its on your lap. The best way i can describe it, is that its like a Nokia charger, just bigger and fatter and sticking out from the side of the laptop.
There are 3 USB ports, two one one side. The problem with that is that if you have any wide USB devices they wont be able to fit side by side. However USB sticks that i've tried work fine and normal usb devies shouldnt be a problem.
The fan is quite most of the time, and its pretty quiet even when running. However when the fan does start up its a quiet hum. When you start on the laptop connected to the power cord, it does become noisy, but only for the first lets say five seconds, after that it goes quiet.
The laptop isnt the fastest in the world, it takes over a minute to start up, but its able to run a number of applications at once. For example i can play a video on the background, type in Word, have Internet explorer running and be able to download something and everything would be running silky smooth.
Its not the lightest laptop in the world. The DVD drive also isnt the quietest drive in the world, in fact its noisy when reading and writing, so if your going to use the drive a lot you may want too think a bit harder about this laptop.
Do i recommend this? yes, if you hate your netbook because its underpowered, you dont want to spend loads of money on a new laptop but want something that will survive for a few years, this is the one to get. However i recommend the one being sold on Amazon (g62-105SA) THIS ONE - as you get more for less!!!!
