Sean Kennedy is a great addition fo the ranks of gay novelists. His book is based in Melbourne, where he grew up, and its heroes are Dec, a successful Aussie-rules football star, and Simon, who runs an artistic film festival. Opposites attract and the story revolves around the complesity of the relationship between the two guys, compounded by the huge problems when Dec is outed. This part of the book is brilliantly done in its depiction of the almost love-destroying effects, not just of homophobic hate, but of the sheer volume and intensity of media and public attention.
The relationship between Dec and Simon is also compellingly drawn: warm, loving, sexy - and quarrelsome. I found it hard to put down and loved it.
