Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down.It
helped that I'd read Peter Freestone's book first, which puts Freddie's life in a broader context. This book is a love story with the worst possible ending.
Hutton's natural style tells how he met and fell in love with Freddie "Thing", though his feet stayed firmly on the ground. He goes on to tell of how,inevitably, Freddie's health began to worsen.His account of how Freddie was cared for by Jim, Joe and
Peter is very moving.Freddie's death was heart-breaking. Then, as if that weren't enough, the treatment of the three friends, especially Jim,in the months after their bereavement was -
well, you can form your own opinion. And keep a box of
tissues to hand, 'cause you'll need them, though there are plenty of lighter moments, too.
