As a vegetarian, the works of Elizabeth David have always left me cold, relying as they seemed to on the cadavers of beasts, fowl and fish as the basis for their recipes. This book, however, is a gorgeously produced collection of her flesh-free recipes, and it's a brilliant addition to the vegetarian cook's bookshelf. The recipes featured in various of her classic books from the fifties and sixties, and are here expertly organised by her literary executor. Many of the dishes are adaptations of traditional Mediterranean fare, and range from simple starters and salads to main meals. The photographs are mouth-wateringly good, and the temptation is to work your way through from start to finish. Good to have a vegetarian cookbook from this doyenne of cookery writers.
