This review is from: A Month-by-month Organic Gardening: Green Gardener's Calendar (Paperback)
This relatively slim volume (144 pages) is first rate. Written by one of the godfathers of organic gardening it covers an astonishing variety of subjects and in immense detail, and its pages are replete with much of the knowledge gleaned by Lawrence D. Hills over decades of experimentation. It achieves this feat by using a relatively small font, few (well-chosen) photographs (contrast "The A-Z of Companion Planting", which uses varying, rather large fonts and pointless photos), and many, very useful tables. Hills' knowledge of pests and solutions to pests is also mind-boggling.
If it has a drawback, it's that Hills' style of writing is somewhat idiosyncratic, hence my "near classic" label. Sentences often need to be re-read to understand them properly (believe me, it's well worth doing so!), so it's not perhaps that easy to dip into and rewards a thorough reading (even better, repeated ones). This will probably make it a bit less popular with those born after, say, 1980, but if your attention span is halfway decent you're likely to benefit greatly from reading this excellent book.
