Pretty dark, but very pleasant listening!,

I found this album purely by chance - it was left inside a car that I bought by the previous owner. I played it, and couldn't believe what I was hearing. Why would such a great album be so relatively ignored, when the Velvet's 'banana' album (which I think is quite poor) gets all the credit?
Well, I think it's all down to fashion. If the Great and the Good said "this is THE Lou Reed album to buy!" I think it would sell in bucketloads. I think every track on the album is excellent, it has a pretty dark 'drink and drugs problem' dimension, but unlike many idiots he's not glorifying either. And there's a strong sense of humour and optimism in there too. Albums like this can't be written until the songwriter is older and mature. This is authentic, creative musical poetry, the real thing. And oddly enough, it's actually in a kind of 'easy listening' style. Unusually excellent.
