Gives you nightmares. A horrible book.,
This review is from: Struwwelpeter in English Translation (Dover Children's Classics) (Paperback)
I was given a copy of this book when I was four or five years old and I remember it scared the hell out of me and I had screaming nightmares, especially about thumbs being cut off. (Not that I ever actually sucked my thumb...)
Now I'm 31, quite grown up, not scared of anything and have a little boy of my own. Just found this online and all the memories came flooding back - if somebody gave my son a copy of this I would incinerate it, or at the very least keep it until he is 21. I may as well let him watch Tarantino films at 18 months old.
The morals of the story are fine and I agree with them, but they are not portrayed in a way that is acceptable in 2011. It is a disturbing book with some disturbing imagery and whilst I'm sure the author means well it is a little too shocking for small children.
I don't make a habit of writing reviews but this book makes my skin creep. Something about it is just not right.

Mystery Martian says:
I don't know about it being 21+ - maybe 8+ if they are mature enough to handle the subject matter and are not overly sensitive. I read gorier things as an 8 year old girl and wasn't upset at all.
