Not so useful - even for a technophobe,
This review is from: Panasonic DMR-EZ25EB áDVD Recorder with Freeview (Electronics)
Although another reviewer suggested this was ideal for technophobes, I haven't found life with this unit very gratifying. Apart from niggles like the fact that if you set it to record it will tell you that you have an unformatted disc, but taking 4 or 5 re-insertions of the disc before bothering to offer you the opportunity of formatting it.
I had not realized before buying it that you cannot watch one channel while recording another. This makes it almost totally useless for me. I'm 40, ergo I don't want to record loads of junk while I'm out getting legless, I want to record things I can't watch because TV companies invariably schedule programmes against one another for the same audience - tonight I wanted to watch Dalziel & Pascoe and record House - it is not to be. I am incredibly fed up with this heap of junk.

Good to learn that it cannot enable watch and record freeview at the same time which is a shame, and but for your review I would not have noticed this and looked into it further, but that is not part of the design. As I look prospectively at buying one, it does nevertheless seem to be one of the best, most reliable and easiest to use products at anything like a reasonable price on the market, so to damn it as a heap of junk for the fact it doesn't have twin freeview tuners (which is stated on the box) does seem a bit harsh. It doesn't sound like it is actually a heap of junk as pretty much all DVD recorders seem to have this same failing, but it isn't a Hard disk based PVR (or PVR/DVD combi unit) and it isn't a Sky+ box either. Sounds like you would have been better off with a PVR box, or with adding a PVR box to your setup.

You are right - that was harsh in a way, but they could make this stuff clearer to people, in a sense the product includes the marketing... However, I've now had it about a year and it has broken down permanently, demanding an SD card before it will play any DVD home recorded or otherwise. I've unhooked it and taken it to the dump. Because I have Tiscali broadband, I've now decided to sign up to their TV/phone/broadband package, and may opt soon to get the recorder they offer.

Hey 'phobe -maybe you should get out more. And have a few jars. You know it can be fun! More fun than D + Pascoe anyday.
You could do with a PVR but they are inherently unreliable and may have you hitting the bottle in despair anyway.
Hope you find joy.
