Really really good fun,
This review is from: Finale SongWriter Music Notation Software 2012 Version (CD-ROM)I downloaded the trial version from the internet first - I'd recommend this. I personally love the product but recognise, equally, it may not be for everyone. I sense an absolute music novice may get frustrated. A purist may become frustrated with the (slightly unconvincing) sounds made by a couple of the instruments.
However, I fall in the middle category, of being a rank amateur but just about remember my clefs and notes, so could quickly work out what I wanted to do. I am also not expecting miracles.
Re: The product itself: choose from tens of instruments (woodwind, percussion, strings, guitars, keyboards, pianos etc); assemble a band and then the staves appear. Choose notes & rests et al, its pretty well as simple as that. On playback, some instruments sound better than others: I think the violins and general strings section is great; as are oboes and flutes; electric guitars are a little coarse; synths a little quiet. A mixer is quite basic, but suffices to add reverb and turn the volumes up and down of individual instruments. Usability, is great for general use and a little clunky for deleting and adding instruments et al
Overall, though - totally addictive, great fun, a surprisingly enjoyable way to spend an evening with a friend too (composing a masterpiece with a glass or two of claret!)..... I'd endorse completely, particularly for the price.
