Take out the historical context and this is a rather straightforward, somewhat simplistic tale told in a very straightforward way with no real twists or turns (the term 'predictable' springs to mind). Romantic novels are not my normal cup of tea. So why did I read it? Because it's a genre I've not tried before. Having read this I now better understand the appeal of the genre although this particular novel would not persuade me to convert. The story is let down by the author's inability to evoke what feels like a credible and convincing historical context. The latter is window dressing at best. The characters do not feel anchored in the historical period.
