Comfort and spice,
This review is from: Comfort & Spice (New Voices in Food) (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)I am a complete food lover and my book shelves are already bulging with many wonderful cookbooks, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to add to my collection! Niamh Shields is most famous for her her food blog 'Eat Like A Girl', and Comfort & Spice is her first cookbook and what an achievement it is. The book is written in an informal and relaxed style with recipes that are possible for even novice cooks (like my girlfriend). Throughout the book the recipes she gives are simple but tasty without the reams of complex instructions you might find with some other cooks out there. Niamh also provides a little history of the dish or a travel tale to accompany the recipe so people get a feel for the food itself and where it hails from. This is a lovely little touch and really helps to ground each recipe.
There is a wide range of recipes covered throughout the book allowing you to pick and choose the complexity of your dish depending on your mood - an essential option for those of us with a busy lifestyle who can only spend a long time cooking at weekends and need quicker recipes during the week.
There are 5 sections to the book covering Brunch, Speedy Suppers, Long Weekend, Sugar and Spice and Drinks as well as the standard introductions and appendices. The only real issues I have with this book are that not all the recipes have a photograph - I realise this is not essential but it is good to know that your mountain of colourful mush looks roughly like it should - and also that the cover is not exactly kitchen friendly. Although the simple rough card cover looks effective when combined with the red foil design, it is not particularly wipe clean and has a habit of absorbing any minor spills that might happen nearby. Not that I keep my cookery books pristine but I do like to have a bit of protection for them. Perhaps others out there are just tidier cooks than I but until I get a plastic cover for this book I won't feel comfy with some of the messier recipes!
