The Dark Ages never looked better.,
This review is from: Vikings: Season 1 [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Sure, there are some historical liberties taken in this series, but I would like to take a moment to remind the reader what time period this show takes place. This time period isn't exactly celebrated by its historical accounts and record-keeping. Most, if not all of our modern entertainment that deals with characters of old is based around fragments, sagas, brief bits of tales, poetry etc. I'm sorry if this makes some of you PhD-types sniff in academic disgust and cause you to come online and start ranting as if this were one of your classes in the university, but we are dealing with ENTERTAINMENT, not archaeology.
And as far as entertainment goes, this show delivers. The Norsemen are shown as barbaric, bloody, pagan warriors capable of unspeakable deeds, and yet painfully human, with real emotions and family ties. They are portrayed beautifully and complex.
Not since Monty Python and the Holy Grail has a piece about this time period enthralled me as much. I know that's like comparing apples to oranges, but it's true, and if you get it, great.
